Krueger Fine Arts Series

In 1990, the late Lyle L. Krueger `64 MBA`97, a former member of the Lakeland College Board of Trustees, and his wife the former Kay Walkenhorst `65, endowed the Krueger Fine Arts Series, the annual lineup of fine arts events held at Lakeland's Bradley Fine Arts Building. Lyle and Kay were both accomplished actors during their time at Lakeland and ardent supporters of the theatre.

Every year, the KFAS lineup gives Lakeland students an opportunity to experience live fine arts performances, a compliment to the education they are receiving in Lakeland's classrooms. Lakeland students need to earn convocation credits as part of their graduation requirements, and each of these performances counts as a convocation credit.

Lakeland's 2007-08 Krueger Fine Arts Series lineup offers a little something for everyone, including a visit from popular singer-songwriter Andrew Bird and the comedy of Chicago's Second City.

All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Bradley Fine Arts Building. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for non-Lakeland students. Group discounts (20%) are now available for groups of 15 or more. The Company's productions take the audience beyond cultural boundaries to where tradition meets innovation and freedom arises from discipline.

Choreographer/Dancer Nai-Ni Chen is an artist whose work defies categorization, as she is continually working on new ideas from influences around the world. Her mesmerizing and dramatic contemporary choreography has gained increasing recognition among domestic and international presenters and festivals. Most recently, the Company was honored by a distinctive grant award from both the President's Committee on Arts and Humanities and the Department of State to represent the United States in a seven-city tour arranged by the Tamaulipas International Arts Festival in Mexico.

Presented by some of the most prestigious concert halls in the United States, from the Joyce Theater in New York to the Ordway Center in Minnesota and the Cerritos Center in California, this year the Company mounts its 20th national tour and its seventh abroad.

The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company also has the unique honor of having received more than 12 awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and numerous Citations of Excellence and grants from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. In the First China International Dance Festival in Kunming, Yunan, the China Dance Association presented to the Company its most prestigious honor for companies not based in China, the Golden Lotus Award.

In addition to its nearly 40-week season of touring and performing, the Company also serves as a cultural ambassador for children and families in the NY/NJ/CT/PA area. Its outreach ensemble program The Art of Chinese Dance has, since 1995, been reaching more than 40,000 young people each year.

Originally formed in Chicago and the source of some of comedies biggest stars, Second City is a long-running improvisational comedy troupe that has expanded its presence to several other cities, including Toronto, metro-Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York.

The Second City has produced television programs in both the US and Canada including SCTV, Second City Presents and Next Comedy Legend. Since its debut, Second City has consistently been a starting point for several comedians, award winning actors, directors, and others in show business.

Originally formed in Chicago and the source of some of comedies biggest stars, Second City is a long-running improvisational comedy troupe that has expanded its presence to several other cities, including Toronto, metro-Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York.

The Second City has produced television programs in both the US and Canada including SCTV, Second City Presents and Next Comedy Legend. Since its debut, Second City has consistently been a starting point for several comedians, award winning actors, directors, and others in show business.

Second City evolved from the Compass Players, a 1950s cabarets revue show started by undergraduates at the University of Chicago. The troupe chose the self-mocking name "The Second City" from the title of an article about Chicago by A.J. Liebling that appeared in The New Yorker magazine in 1952.

The style of comedy has changed with time, but the format has remained constant. Second City revues feature a mix of semi-improvised and scripted scenes with new material developed during unscripted improv sessions after the second act where scenes are created based on audience suggestions. A Second City innovation is the inclusion of live, improvised music during the performance.

In the mid-1970s, Second City became a source of cast members for Saturday Night Live, which borrowed from the writing and performing techniques pioneered by Second City and other improv groups, and members of the Toronto troupe created the program SCTV.
