Lakeland adds to Katrina relief effort

General - posted on 9/8/2005

Lakeland College has joined the rest of the nation in rallying to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, which ravaged parts of the Gulf Coast in September.

Lakeland is offering spaces for 10 students from Dillard University in New Orleans to study during the 2005-06 school year.

Dillard, a liberal arts college founded in 1869, is historically African-American and affiliated with both the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church.

Lakeland will take up to 10 Dillard students tuition free for the 2005-06 school year. Lakeland started classes on August 29, but had plans to work with any interested Dillard students in helping them transition into Lakeland classrooms.

"Like the rest of the nation, we are huddling here at Lakeland to find ways we can help the people affected by Hurricane Katrina get back on their feet," said Lakeland President Stephen Gould.

"Dillard closely matches Lakeland in its history and mission, and we are committed to doing whatever we can to help even a few students keep their dream of earning a college degree on track."

At the season-opening football game on Sept. 3, students in Lakeland's Mortar Board chapter accepted donations for preferred parking for the football game. The impromptu fundraiser brought in over $500, all of which will be donated to the American Red Cross.

"It is times like these when we pause to remember how fortunate we are to have our health and our families," said Jim Cape, Lakeland's Vice President of Advancement. "The images from the Gulf Coast are discouraging, but we can all do something to make a difference in helping these people get back on their feet."

Lakeland students are still busy working on other activities and events designed to raise money for the relief effort.
