George Archibald, a co-founder and chairman of the board of directors of the International Crane Foundation (ICF), will discuss the ICF and its work at Lakeland College on Sept. 27.
The 11 a.m. lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Lakeland's Bradley Building.
Among the people captivated by the beauty and mystique of cranes were two Cornell University graduate students - George Archibald and Ron Sauey - who were investigating crane behavior and ecology.

Realizing that cranes were under intense pressure from the world's rapidly expanding human population, they decided to establish an organization dedicated to the study and preservation of cranes. In 1973, they founded the International Crane Foundation on the horse farm owned by Sauey's parents just north of Baraboo.
Archibald has traveled all over the world to study and to get a better understanding of cranes, and the importance of preserving the wetlands.
His work with the ICF has helped to investigate crane behavior and ecology. Archibald successfully bred a whooping crane by artificial insemination through mimicking the courtship dancing and behavior of a male crane. This successful process has produced seven offspring. The ICF stresses the importance of preserving cranes for captive breeding and reintroduction into the wild.
Archibald and the ICF strive to maintain the importance of the relationships between wildlife and their habits. Through the preservation of cranes, it serves as a symbol to inspire people from all over the globe to trust each other and to work together to preserve these enchanting birds.
