A team from Horace Mann Middle School topped a field of over 500 students competing in the 16th annual Lakeland College Middle School Math meet on Nov. 10.
A total of 501 middle school students from 13 local schools participated in the meet, just the third time the meet has eclipsed the 500-student mark.
The students competed in teams of eight, at first working individually on four sets of four problems, then as a team on the last six exercises.
The winning team was Horace Mann No. 1 which included eighth graders Alice Zhao, Emily Ristow, Anna Shircel and Brennan Gundrum; seventh graders Kevin Chen, Jon Wheeler and Brandon Pakkebier; and sixth grader Stephanie Sue Gerber. The team finished with a total of 243 points.
Two teams finished in a tie for second, just four points behind Horace Mann. They were Cedar Grove-Belgium No. 1 and Farnsworth No. 3. Third place went to team #1 from Cedar Grove-Belgium. The next three places went to two teams from Urban and one from Sheboygan Falls.
The individual winners were led by two students who tied with perfect scores of 40 - Alice Zhao from Horace Mann and Matthew Griffith from Urban Middle School. It's the first time in meet history that two students tied with 40 points.
Mike Paluchniak from Oostburg finished third with 36 points, as he missed only one question on the four individual events.
Participating schools included: Cedar Grove-Belgium, Farnsworth, Holy Family, Horace Mann, Howards Grove, Kohler, Oostburg, Oostburg Christian, Random Lake, Sheboygan Christian, Sheboygan Falls, St. Dominic and Urban.
