Lakeland College will spotlight the work of five senior art students when the first of two Lakeland Senior Art Student Portfolio Exhibitions opens on Friday, January 27.

Piece by Tim WiverstadDavid Fayne, Della Jahnke, Kasumi Sagae, Rob Schoettler and Tim Wiverstad will discuss their work during an opening reception beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Bradley Gallery, located in the Bradley Fine Arts Building on Lakeland's campus.

The exhibit, which will feature works created by these students during their time at Lakeland, will run through Feb. 25. The Bradley Gallery is open from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday, when the college is in session. Attendance at the reception and admittance to the Bradley Gallery are both free and open to the public.

The senior art show is a requirement for all Lakeland art majors. Students gain the experience of having their own exhibit, and are responsible for planning the show, putting the public relations together, hanging their work and any other details.

Fayne is working toward a bachelor's degree in art with a graphic art emphasis. He specializes in photography and graphic design, has produced ad campaign strategies for a variety of products and services and for three years taught art classes to inner city children for Milwaukee Public Schools.

"The photographs I take are seen through the camera; they are not manipulated in the darkroom or computer," Fayne said. "I am often amazed at the shapes and forms that have appeared in my work. My intention has always been to explore the body, shapes, people's daily routines and human nature."

Jahnke is also working toward a bachelor's degree in art with a graphic art emphasis. She came to Lakeland from Southwest Wisconsin Technical College, where she earned an associate degree in accounting. She served an internship at Effjay Projekts in Sheboygan.

Work by Rob Schoettler"Art is not defined by doing things in a certain way; it is defined by the vast expression of our creativity," Jahnke said. "Expanding how I think is only the beginning in how far I can go with my creativity. My goal is to expand my creativity in photography and improve my techniques."

Sagae is also working toward a bachelor's degree in art with a graphic art emphasis after transferring to Lakeland from the college's Tokyo campus where he earned an associate degree.

"Pens and markers are my favorite media because when I get an idea, I want to draw it right away," Sagae said. "Also, I like simple and cheap media that I can get anywhere, so if I have a pen and paper, these are enough for me to express myself through drawing."

Schoettler, of Black Creek, Wis., is also working toward a bachelor's degree in art with a graphic art emphasis. He served an internship for the college's career development office which allowed him to use his art skills to help promote the department's programs.

"Lady of Light" by Della Jahnke"I was always an avid outdoorsman, but never realized my role in taking from the earth and giving back and not wasting these God-given resources," Schoettler said. "Now, through my artwork, I preserve these resources and show them to people who have not been able experience them."

Wiverstad, of Kiel, is working toward a bachelor's in art with a studio and graphics emphasis. He's using his talents in an internship in the college's career development office creating posters and event promotion pieces.

"The way I view my artwork may not be the same way anyone else would view it," Wiverstad said. "Sometimes I view it as a metaphor for my life experiences, and sometimes it's just an emotional rollercoaster of how I was feeling when a certain piece was made. My art is designed for me, but at the same time I try to reflect on things that people can relate to."
