Muslim American experience the focus of event

Challenges and opportunities for Muslim Americans will be the focus of a program sponsored by Lakeland College's Mission House Center.

Othman Atta, executive director of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, and several of his students from the Salam School will discuss Islam and share some experiences that they have had as Muslim Americans. The presentation, "Islam in America: Challenges and Opportunities," is Tuesday, February 12, in the Bradley Theater at 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Atta will open the program with a presentation, but the majority of the evening will focus on audience questions and conversation.

"Our hope is that this event will enable Lakeland students, staff and members of the surrounding community", says Karl Kuhn, Associate Professor of Religion, "to enhance their understanding of Islam, and to learn about some of the challenges and opportunities our Muslim neighbors experience as American citizens."

Atta holds a law degree from Marquette University and owns a private law practice. He is a representative of the Islamic Society on the board of the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee, and he serves on the Marquette University Law School advisory board.

He received his bachelor in biological sciences and international relations from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is the recipient of the 2003 Wisconsin Chapter ' ACLU "Civil Libertarian of the Year Award." In 2007, he also received the Wisconsin Law Journal's "Leader in the Law Award" and taught at Cardinal Stritch University.

He currently teaches courses on Islam and Middle-East Politics for UW-Extension and is on the board of the Wisconsin Chapter of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee as well a commissioner with the Milwaukee Commission on Police-Community Relations.
