Lakeland Mirror takes home second at Best of the Midwest Convention

The Lakeland College Mirror won second place in their division at the annual Best of the Midwest Convention of the Associated Collegiate Press. The convention was held Feb. 8-10 in Minneapolis.

Several Mirror staff members attended the convention, including Michelle Fromm, managing editor; Leah Ulatowski, copy editor; staff reporters Sean Gilligan, Katie Amundsen and Amanda Smith; and adviser Dawn Hogue.

The convention allows college journalists from Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin to learn how to improve their skills through presentations and workshops by industry professionals and through networking with their peers. The Lakeland Mirror submitted individual entries for news story, editorial, feature story and others.

"I am extremely proud of my staff for all of the hard work that they have put into the Mirror this year," said Stephanie Rebek, editor-in-chief of the Mirror. "The Mirror demands a lot of time and devotion from our staff and editors. Getting second place is proof of my staff's dedication to putting out a great issue."

The staff met with Lawrence Baden, a journalism professor from Webster University in St. Louis, for a personalized critique session.

"His advice helped us see both the positive aspects of our paper as well as a few things we could improve," said Dawn Hogue, Mirror adviser. "He was quite complimentary. He said that for a small staff, we do an excellent job. He urged us to remember to always remember the student voice, and to ask questions that will more effectively connect our stories to students and what matters to them."
