All of Lakeland’s studio art courses involve the daily production of artwork, which is a “student-as-practitioner” experience in every sense of the term. However, experiences in several classes ask students to move beyond the process of making artwork and into the world of a professional artist or graphic designer. In addition to internships, Student-as-Practitioner opportunities focus on the development of professional portfolios and exhibitions of student work. In the non-studio Art History courses (ART 263 and ART 264); students attend exhibitions and artist receptions in the Bradley Gallery where they have the opportunity to interact with the artists.

  • Professional Portfolio: Students in Portfolio Preparation (ART 339) not only create a digital and physical portfolio for job interviews and graduate school applications, but are also required in a graded assignment either to apply for a job, internship, off-campus exhibition opportunity or graduate school. This course not only prepares students to create artwork, but also to present their works and discuss them professionally.
  • Exhibitions On-Campus: All studio courses require students to submit work for the annual student exhibition in the Bradley Art Gallery, and students enrolling in Senior Exhibition (ART 401) exhibit in the Bradley Gallery during the last semester of their senior year. Exhibitions in other campus venues are also possible.
  • Exhibitions Off-Campus: Exhibitions Off-Campus: Portfolio Preparation (ART 339) students are also required to either hang a solo exhibit in a gallery space off-campus or enter student or professional art competitions. As a result, students have exhibited in the Z-Spot Café, John Michael Kohler Art Center, Gallery 110 North, Paradigm, and the Neville Art Gallery, to name a few.
