Nelson Leads Muskies to Win Over MSOE

Athletics - posted on 3/30/2006

Junior Brett Nelson hit three doubles and had two runs batted in as he and the Lakeland baseball team rolled to victory over MSOE, 9-5, on Thursday afternoon.

Nelson went 3-for-4 and also hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the Muskies' three-run eighth inning.

MSOE got on the board first against Steudel with one run in the top of the first, but the Muskies answered with three runs in their half of the first behind RBI hits from Nelson, Matt Andrews and Adam Brown.

Leading 5-4 in the top of the seventh, the Muskies caught a break with runners on the corners and one out when an interference call was declared on MSOE for a double play that ended the threat. After Tony DeMuth struck out Kevin Biederer for the second out,  Biederer walked in front of Andrews' throw to second as Kevin Curtin attempted the steal.

Senior Nick Steudel earned the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits in six innings pitched. Steudel also provided plenty of insurance for himself at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI.

Freshman Dan Rhodes continued to be lights out in the closer role, pitching the team out of a jam in the eighth by getting Justin Gross to fly out with runners on the corners to end the inning. Rhodes then struck out two in the ninth to seal the win and his second save of the year.

The Muskies improved to 3-9 on the season and 2-2 in the Lake Michigan Conference, while MSOE fell to 0-1 in conference and 3-11 overall.

Lakeland has now won 10 straight against MSOE, dating back to 2003. They can extend that streak on Saturday, as they travel to Milwaukee for a doubleheader against the Raiders.
