Catch This - Volleyball and Football Highlight Week of Action
Athletics - posted on 9/6/2005
This week's installment focuses on volleyball, which begins its quest for a fifth straight conference championship, and football, which travels to face a 15th-ranked Carthage squad who tripped up the Muskies 18-14 at home last year.
Tuesday night at 7:00, the volleyball team hosts Edgewood as they get the 2005 Lake Michigan Conference season underway. The four-time defending champs opened the season by easily handling Mt. Mary and Cardinal Stritch, both in three games.
Edgewood finished 2-12 last year in LMC, 3-31 overall, and started this year by losing all four games they played at the UW-La Crosse tournament.
The football team, coming off a 27-15 win over Northwestern College (Minn.), travels to Kenosha Saturday for a 7 p.m. kickoff with the Redmen of Carthage. The Muskies struggled against the Eagles, falling behind 9-7 late in the third quarter before pulling away in the fourth.
Carthage, which started the season ranked 13th in the d3football.com poll after a deep run in last year's playoffs, faced similar troubles getting past a Carroll squad that finished 2-8 in 2004.
Lakeland quarterback Ryan Maiuri led the Muskies in passing and rushing, posting 285 total yards and three scores (two rushing, one passing). As a team, Lakeland rushed for 346 yards, while the defense, which was led Saturday by senior linebacker Ryan Van De Loo's 10.5 tackles (including four for loss) and two sacks, held the Eagles to 54 yards on the ground.
