Women's Tennis Closed Out Regular Season With 6-3 Loss

Athletics - posted on 10/5/2005

The Lakeland Muskies women's tennis team finished their regular season with a 6-3 loss to Lawerence. The Muskies Chizuru Masuda and Andrea Schuchart won in singles play, while Lisa Hentges teamed up with Mary Stockman for a doubles victory. The match was played as eight-game pro sets because of a late start.

"This was the last match of the regular season and also our toughest opponent of the year," said head coach Michael Devaney. "Lawrence is 12-1, having only lost to UW-Whitewater. They have also defeated four LMC schools, including #1 Concordia and #3 Edgewood by a combined score of 26-2. I think our results show that we have made progress since the beginning of the year and are playing our best heading into this weekend's tournament in Madison."

Masuda won her match by a score of 8-4, while Schuchart was able to shutout her opponent 8-0. In doubles play Hentges and Stockman defeated their opponent in a hard fought match 8-6.

"Our immediate goal is to get into the winners' brackets in as many flights as we can," said Devaney. "After we succeed at that we will start thinking about how far up we can move from our present last-place position."

The Muskies will be trying to move up from the last-place position this weekend at the LMC tournament in Madison.
