The Lakeland Muskies had three wrestlers compete in the Dan Gable Collegiate Open hosted by Oshkosh on Friday, Jan. 13. Freshman Kory Thiel (141) took sixth place in the tournament style dual, the best finish for Lakeland on the day.
Thiel, the number two seed in the 141 weight class bracket, had a bye in the first round before dropping a 5-0 decision to Will McDermott of Northern Illinois. In the loser's bracket the Cary, Ill. native lost a 7-0 decision to Derek Koenig of UW-Oshkosh. In the fifth place match, Thiel lost to Josh Bauer of the University of Mary, 8-3.
Senior Lee Sparks (197) went 2-2 in his bracket defeating John Treml of UW-Parkside in the first round 6-3, before dropping his second round match to Jesse Laber 12-1 of University of Mary. In the loser's bracket the Otsego, Mich. native defeated Louis Puracchio of Illinois 3-2, before losing to Justin McAuly of UW-Eau Claire 11-3.
The final wrestler for Lakeland, junior Matt Benson dropped his opening round match to Kyle Massey of Wisconsin by a pin at 2:52. Benson then defeated Chris Assaf of University of Mary with a pin at 1:30, before falling in the second round of the loser's bracket to Jeff Burdorf of Northern Illinois 6-0.
The wrestling program will be hosting the Wisconsin Private College Invite starting at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
