Lakeland College vs. Carthage College Football Preview

Athletics - posted on 9/7/2005

Lakeland Muskies at #15 Carthage Redmen

Where: Art Keller Field, Carthage campus, Kenosha, Wis.

Kickoff: 7 p.m., Saturday

Records: Lakeland 1-0; Carthage 1-0.

Who to watch: Lakeland quarterback Ryan Maiuri, last week's Illini-Badger Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week after racking up 182 yards passing and 103 yards rushing in the Muskies' 27-15 win over Northwestern (Minn.), is the backbone of an offense that gained a total of 528 yards last week.

Protecting him will be Lakeland's beefy front five, who will have to stop Carthage senior defensive lineman Jason Kalinowski. Kalinowski recorded just six tackles last week, but four of them were for loss, including one sack. Carthage may also start freshman quarterback Brennan O'Boyle, who replaced starter Michael Sharp and led the Redmen to a come-from-behind 14-10 victory over Carroll last week. He will face a Muskie line known for putting tremendous pressure on opposing signal callers that tallied six sacks in their opening game.

What's at stake: Plain and simple - respect. Carthage is ranked 15th in the nation according to d3football.com. Lakeland lost by just four points, after leading for three quarters of the game, last year to a Redmen team that made it all the way to the round of eight in the NCAA playoffs. The Muskies were the only IBFC team to record a win last week and are looking to put themselves on the map with the nation's best.
