Whitewater, WI
- The Lakeland Muskies traveled into Whitewater, looking to hand the
#18 ranked Warhawks their first loss of the season while getting back
on track after a loss to Carthage College last week.
The
Muskies fell behind as Whitewater went to the ground attack, breaking a
large run for 37 yards on just the third play from scrimmage.
Whitewater’s Keiya Square was able to punch the ball in from the 18
yard line to give the Warhawks an early 7-0 lead.
The
Muskies would then get the ball and begin the drive to answer the Warhawks. After a false start penalty killed the drive, Casey Kedrowski
had his punt blocked, and Whitewater’s Derek Brow would return the kick
33 yards for another quick Whitewater score, putting the Muskies down
14-0.
Lakeland
would come back with an answer, putting together an eight play 76 yard
drive that would end with a Ryan Maiuri pass connecting with Courtney
Gatlin for a 44 yard touchdown, that would make the score 14-7.
After
a huge kick return for the Warhawks, Colin Burns would score on a 25
yard jog to put Whitewater up 21-7. The defense for both teams would
then join the game, with both teams unable to put together any
significant drives. At the end of the first quarter, the score would
remain 21-7.
At
the start of the second quarter, the Warhawks would put a drive
together, driving down the field and pounding the run down on Lakeland,
with Whitewater’s Jim Lesczynski scoring on a 19 yard touchdown pass to
make the score 28-7. The Muskies would not be deterred however, putting
together a healthy drive, ncluding Marcus Denham rushing and Ryan
Maiuri pasing for large gains putting the Muskies in position to score,
and from two yards out, Nick Hunter punched the ball in to make the
score 28-13 after Casey Kedrowski’s kick missed wide.
Lakeland’s
defense would come put big, forcing a three and out by the Warhawks,
and the offense would get the ball back on the 48 yard line and put
together another scoring drive that would end in Kenneth Grundy
punching it in from one yard out to make the score 28-20. That would be
the score going into the locker room at the half.
The
Muskies would retain their intensity early in the second half, coming
back to tie the game after Josh Labelle recovered a Warhawks fumble and
Ryan Maiuri hit Matt Martin for a 10 yard touchdown. A two point
conversion brought the Muskies even at 28-28.
Whitewater
would come back two series later, getting the ball at midfield after
the Muskies were unable to convert a 4th and 1. The Warhawks marched
down the field and punch the ball in from two yards out to put
Whitewater up 35-28.
The
Muskies offense began to sputter, unable to stay on track against the
stingy defense of the War Hawks. The Warhawks would keep the ball on
the ground, and score again from five yards out to go up 42-28. The
Muskie offense would continue to sputter against a stingy defense,
unable to put a scoring drive together. Whitewater would seal the deal
with six minutes left, with War Hawk QB Mike Askren hitting WR Peter
Schmitt in the back of the end zone for the final score of the game,
making the score 48-28.
The
Muskies had 24 first downs on the day, gaining 12 on the ground and 10
through the air. The Muskies gained 100 more yards on the ground than
the War Hawks, 264-164. The Muskies also gained 60 more total yards,
404-344, but were unable to capitalize against a tough Whitewater team.
Ryan Maiuri (Stearling Heights) led the ground attack for the Muskies
gaining 95 yards on 18 carries for the Muskies Marcus Denham (Zion, IL)
added 79 yards on 17 carries, a 4.5 yard average. Through the air,
Maiuri was 17-39 for 170 yards, with two touchdowns and two
interceptions. He was also sacked four times. Receiving for the
Muskies, Courtney Gatlin (St. Louis) had 4 receptions for 73 yards and
one touchdown. Eric Royal (Oak Park, MI) also added 3 catches for 28
yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Sam Scharinger (Howards
Grove) had 13 tackles, eight of them solo. David Benton (Ashtabule, OH)
added 8 tackles, four of them solo.
With
the loss, the Muskies fall to 1-2 on the season. The Muskies will open
up Illini-Badger football conference action next Saturday, September
25th at home versus Benedictine. Game time is set at 1:30pm.
