Lakeland at Benedictine Football Preview
Athletics - posted on 9/21/2005
Lakeland Muskies at Benedictine University Eagles
Where: Benedictine University, Lisle, Ill.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Saturday
Records: Lakeland 1-2; Benedictine 0-3.
Who to watch: Lakeland senior quarterback Ryan Maiuri and junior running back Aaron Barrie. Last week against #15 UW-Whitewater the running game was able to gain 188 yards led by Mairui. The senior quarterback is rushing for 76 yards per game, while Barrie is averaging 38.7 yards a game. Defensively, the Muskies are led by senior linebacker Ryan Van De Loo. Van De Loo is currently ranked 38th in the nation in tackles for a loss. The senior is also leading the team in solo tackles (15) and in total tackles (22).
Benedictine comes into this weekend's match up with a new head coach in John Cooper, a former Aurora University assistant that will have his troops ready to play. He has inherited a young squad that has 32 underclassmen on the roster of 52. The program has been using two quarterbacks so far this season in junior Efi Eyo and freshman Brody Budmayr. So far, both quarterbacks have combined for three touchdown tosses. The defensive side of the ball sees freshman Joseph Borsellino leading the team with 17 tackles.
What's at stake: After disappointing losses last week, both the Muskies and the Eagles are looking forward to opening IBFC play. The slate has been wiped clean now that non-conference play is over and the goal is to win conference and make the playoffs. It is important for both squads to start conference play off on a good note if they want to contend for a title.
