The UW-Whitewater tournament this weekend proved to be a difficult tournament for the Lakeland volleyball squad as the Muskies were only able to take one of the four matches they played. The tournament featured some very tough competition and the Muskies at times played well, however, they lost to UW-Whitewater, IIT, and UW-Oshkosh 3-0. Their lone win came against North Central 3-1.
"It appears we are realizing that the top end of our game can be pretty good," said head coach Chad Schreiber. "We were in the Whitewater match the entire time. Unfortunately, we have not learned how to sustain our top level and we let mistakes come in bunches. That is still most evident in our serving, serve receive, and shot selection. North Central was a good win. If we come away from the weekend learning how to stay consistent things will get better. I still feel we need to lean harder on our seniors for us to be great."
In the first match against UW-Whitewater the Muskies were outscored 30-25, 30-23, 30-19. The offense was led by senior Heather Heberlein with seven kills, senior Danielle Duranceau with six and freshman Heidi Kramer also tallied six kills. Defensively the Muskies were led by senior Sarah Buechel with 10 digs, while Duranceau and Kramer recorded nine each.
In the second match on Friday, Sept. 23 against IIT the Muskies fell once again in three games by scores of 30-19, 30-15, 30-24. Once again the offense was led by Heberlein and Duranceau with eight kills each, while senior Lana Neuman recorded 10 defensive digs.
On Saturday, Sept. 24 the Muskies started off the day with a 3-1 victory over North Central. Lakeland won the first, third and fourth matches with scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 30-24. They dropped the second match 32-30. Heberlein exploded for 20 kills and Buechel recorded 16 digs.
In the second match of the day the Muskies were defeated by UW-Oshkosh in three games, 30-15, 30-19, 30-22. Sophomore Ashley Domask led the team with eight kills and nine digs.
The UW-Whitewater tournament marked the end of an 11-match road trip for the Muskies who return home for an LMC match against Alverno on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7p.m.
