Lakeland, Concordia picked atop IBFC preseason poll

Athletics - posted on 9/22/2004

Last season, Concordia University of Mequon topped Lakeland College to win the Illini-Badger Football Conference.

If the league's head coaches are accurate prognosticators, the league race will once again come down to Lakeland and Concordia, but this year the coaches aren't quite sure who will come out on top.

The IBFC released its preseason coaches poll Tuesday, and Lakeland finished in a first-place tie with Concordia. All eight league coaches vote, and no one can vote for themselves.

MacMurray was picked third, followed by Aurora, Eureka, Greenville, Benedictine and Concordia of Illinois.

"It's nice to be recognized for doing something good here, but it doesn't win any games for you unfortunately," said Lakeland second-year head coach Jim Zebrowski.

"The conference coaches think we have the ability to contend for a championship. I feel in any league the defending champion is the team to beat until someone knocks them off. So I still believe Concordia is the team to beat."

The Muskies will take a 1-2 record into this Saturday's IBFC opener against Benedictine. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Lakeland's Taylor Field.

Lakeland does host Concordia of Wisconsin this season on Oct. 16 for their homecoming game.

Lakeland is coming off a 48-28 loss at unbeaten UW-Whitewater, ranked in the top 25 in all three national Division III polls. The Muskies trailed in that game 28-7, rallied to tie the game at 28 and outgained the Warhawks 404-344.
