Men's Soccer Recognizes Four Seniors

Athletics - posted on 10/20/2005

It will be a weekend of memories and looking back as the men's soccer team celebrates Senior Day when the Muskies host Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday, Oct. 22, for this foursome's final regular season home date.

The senior class this year includes: goaltender Joe Silverberg (South Bend, Ind./South Bend Clay), midfielder/defender David Radder (Kiel/Kiel), defender/midfielder David Arrowood (Neenah/Neenah) and captain defender/midfielder Ryan Holl (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth).

This senior class has endured a lot helping to build Lakeland's program to where it is today, near the top of the conference. Their freshman year, the Muskies finished fourth in the LMC with a 2-1-3 record and a 5-10-6 overall record. In their second year, these players were able to help the team improve to third in the conference with a 3-1-2 finish and an 8-9-2 overall record.

With expectations high for the 2004 campaign, the Muskies hit a road bump with a rash of injuries that dropped the team to fifth place in the LMC. This season, these young men have placed Lakeland near the top of the LMC. They currently sit in second place, and while they cannot win the regular season conference title, a win this weekend would give them sole possession of second and home field advantage until the final round of the LMC tournament.

The Muskies showed during the second half last weekend that they could compete with national power Dominican, the 2005 regular season LMC champions, and the Muskies hope to get a rematch in the finals of the LMC tournament.

Here is a look at the accomplishments of this fine senior class that helped lead the Muskies to an impressive 11-6-7 LMC record the past four seasons:

Team Captain Ryan Holl
Holl has been named the team MVP his first three seasons with the Muskies and in 2004 was named first team All-LMC. While Holl does not get a lot of recognition of the statistics sheet, his work ethic and leadership has been contagious in the Muskies defense.

Ryan's thought on playing at Lakeland: "It has always been a goal of mine to play collegiate soccer. I decided to come to Lakeland because I'd be able to play right away. The decision turned out to be a good decision. I was able to meet a bunch of people right away at a smaller school."

Coach Colwell's thoughts about Ryan: "I remember seeing Ryan play indoor soccer at the SoccerZone in Granger, Indiana when he was a senior in high school. I knew immediately when I saw him go into a tackle that I was going to be getting one heck of a defender. He has rewarded me with four years of stability and skill in the back. Ryan's a very passionate player and because of that he has set the team single season and career total for the number of practices he's gotten kicked out of. He'll probably own his own company one day and I'm sure he'll utilize his experiences at Lakeland on and off the field to succeed."

Team Captain Joe Silverberg
Silverberg has been a staple in the net for the Muskies the past four seasons. His goals against average has improved from 2.02 his freshman year to 1.69 last season. He is on pace to break last year's average this season as he is sporting a 1.43 average through 11 games this season. In addition this season Silverberg was able to etch his name into the Muskie record book when he broke the career shutout record.

Joe's thoughts on playing at Lakeland: "It was hard at first. It has gotten better and I've learned a lot. It was fun playing and going to school."

Coach Colwell's thoughts about Joe: "If you ask Joe, he may still tell you that I ruined his chance of making the US National Team by not making him into a forward when he was in 7th grade (I coached him in 7th and 8th grade in South Bend, Indiana). However, I'm pretty sure I made the right decision by putting him in goal as he's developed into one of the top goalkeepers in the conference. You don't get too many four-year starters in goal especially goalies of this caliber. He's also a diehard Notre Dame Football fan like I am so I've had his support over the last few years with all these Badger fans amongst us."

David Arrowood
Arrowood is another player that doesn't show up in the stat sheet due to his position, but he is a valuable role player for the Muskies and has been able to enter games in key moments and perform exceptionally well.

David's thoughts on playing at Lakeland: "It has meant a lot. It has always been a dream of mine to play collegiate soccer. It has been really nice living that dream and being around everyone from the seniors all the way down to the freshman. The coaches have been really supportive here. It has advanced my college experience greatly as well as expanded my knowledge of the game."

Coach Colwell's thoughts about David: "David is one of the most skillful players that I've coached over the years. He's very gifted in the attack when he wants to get forward. David has started a lot of games for us at outside back and outside mid in his four years. Arrowood is one of the smartest players I've coached over the years. He is constantly asked by other players for help in Accounting classes, etc. It usually only takes David one session to work with these players. It's not that they are helped by David. In fact, they go away more confused as he is way over their heads most times. I'm sure glad he's an accounting major and not in education."

David Radder
Radder has been a valuable player for the Muskies. Once again as a defender he does not appear in the stat sheet very much, but he is a player the Muskies will certainly miss. In 2003 he was given the Coach's Award at the annual Muskie soccer banquet.

David's thoughts on playing at Lakeland: "It was fun playing here. Playing college ball has always been fun. To be able to extend my soccer career for four years is just awesome. The guys here have been great and I made a couple close friends. It has just been a blast."

Coach Colwell's thoughts about David: "David is the consummate team player. He steps in wherever we need him and performs the role necessary to put his team in a position to win. I'm pretty confident that one day we'll be watching ESPN Ocho and David will playing in the World Series of Poker while wearing a purple Kiel Raiders sweatshirt and probably winning the thing. David continues to give back to his community by helping coach at his local high school and soccer club which is great to see."
