Lakeland Muskies vs. Aurora Spartans Football Preview

Athletics - posted on 10/25/2005

Where: Taylor Field, Lakeland College, Sheboygan, Wis.

Kickoff: 1 p.m., Saturday

Records: Lakeland 6-2, 5-0 IBFC; Aurora 4-3, 4-1 IBFC

Who to watch: Lakeland's backfield. The group of backs, including senior quarterback Ryan Maiuri, racked up 541 yards rushing last week against Concordia (Ill.) behind the beefy offensive line that includes three players appearing in their last home game. Maiuri also passed for four touchdowns in last week's game.

The Spartans rely on quarterback Andrew Hornung to move the ball. The junior has passed for 1,344 yards and 14 touchdowns, but will be facing a Muskie defense that is only allowing 250 yards per game and has held conference opponents to an average of 11.2 points per game.

What's at stake: Two weeks ago at Concordia, Wis., Lakeland's seniors did something for the first time in their careers: Win the Cheese Bowl. This week, the Muskies will try to accomplish something no Lakeland team has ever done: Qualify for the NCAA Division III Playoffs. With a win on Saturday, Lakeland secures the Illini-Badger Football Conference's automatic playoff berth bid. It won't be easy - Aurora made the playoff trip last season and shared the IBFC title with Lakeland and Concordia, and the Spartans would love to put themselves in a repeat position this weekend.
