The Lakeland volleyball team captured its fifth straight Lake Michigan Conference title with a 3-0 win against MSOE on Thursday, Oct. 27. With the win, the Muskies improved to 13-3 in the LMC and will share the title this season with Maranatha Baptist. The Muskies won the tie-breaker based on best winning percentage in conference games played, meaning Lakeland will have home-court advantage throughout the LMC tournament.
After a 1-3 start in LMC play, Lakeland won its last 12 league matches, losing just one game in the process. That streak allowed the Muskies to avenge earlier losses to Concordia and Maranatha, and when Concordia beat Maranatha on Oct. 25 it opened the door for the Muskies.
"I said going into the season we may struggle early, but could finish strong," said Lakeland head coach Chad Schreiber. "I never would have guessed how prophetic that statement turned out to be. The team is extremely excited to be hosting the conference tournament.
"Our players were ready for this. A confident determination was visible in their level of play. After starting the season 1-3, we had no room for error. We took care of everything within our control and were fortunate to get the help we needed from other teams."
The Muskies will host a quarterfinal matchup at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3, against the winner of a Nov. 1 match pitting No. 9 seed Alverno and No. 8 Dominican.
"It is awesome to win the conference title every year we as seniors have been here," said Neuman. "Winning conference every year we've been here is a goal of ours that we have now achieved. It's an amazing accomplishment and we've had a lot of fun doing it."
