Lakeland Muskies vs Greenville Panthers Football Preview
Athletics - posted on 11/2/2005
Where: Francis Field Complex, Greenville College, Greenville, Ill.
Kickoff: 1 p.m., Saturday
Records: Lakeland 7-2, 6-0 IBFC; Aurora 4-4, 4-2 IBFC
Who to watch: The Muskie defense. Lakeland was able to disrupt play on almost every snap last week, holding Aurora to just 116 yards of offense in a 58-0 win. Senior defensive end David Benton is among the nation's leaders in sacks per game after adding two more last week against Aurora, and senior linebacker Ryan Van De Loo is near the top of the nation's tackles for loss list.
Greenville brings its own dynamic duo on defense in juniors Russell Reece and J.R. Harriel, who both rank in the top 10 of both sacks per game and tackles for loss in the Illini-Badger Football Conference.
What's at stake: With Lakeland's first trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs already secure, if the Muskies win this game Lakeland finishes the conference season with an undefeated record and earns the program's first outright conference championship since 1997. The Muskies are also hoping to keep their momentum rolling into the postseason, which will begin on Nov. 19.
