The Lakeland College football team rolled up 657 yards of offense and the defense pitched a shutout in Saturday’s 48-0 Illini-Badger Conference victory at Eureka College in Eureka, Ill.
Lakeland scored four times in the third quarter to blow open a game the Muskies led 14-0 at the half.
Lakeland, now 3-2 overall, remains tied atop the IBFC at 2-0 with Aurora, a 24-7 upset winner over Concordia of Mequon. Lakeland and Concordia were picked as co-champs in the IBFC preseason coaches poll.
The Muskies’ ground game was the main weapon again Saturday as Lakeland gained 473 of its yards rushing.
Lakeland’s sophomore running backs led the way as Aaron Barrie had 154 yards rushing on 16 carries and a pair of touchdowns, while Marcus Denham had 19 carries for 122 yards and two TDs. Ten different Lakeland players had carries as the Muskies had 71 total rushing attempts in the game.
Junior quarterback Ryan Maiuri was 9 of 14 for 157 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to freshman wide receiver Eric Bayerl.
Lakeland, which is averaging 42.2 points per game, returns to action Saturday in Jacksonville, Ill., in an IBFC contest at 3-1 MacMurray College.
