David Madsen, a standout college soccer player and the top assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, is Lakeland College's new head men's and women's soccer coach.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to coach the men's and women's soccer teams at Lakeland College," Madsen said. "The men's team is in a good position to compete right away, and the women's team is a proven winner. Both teams have a lot of positives to build off from the past few years, and I look forward to the chance to establish the Lakeland soccer program as an annual contender as we enter a new athletic conference this coming fall."
Madsen spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach for the men's and women's soccer programs at his alma mater, UW-Whitewater. In addition to the field players, Madsen also worked with the goalkeepers extensively.
"We had a number of qualified candidates, but David stood out as a coach that knows what it takes to be competitive at the Division III level," said Lakeland Athletic Director Jane Bouche. "The new conference we are joining includes a number of great soccer programs, and David will help both our programs be among the new league's elite."
As a player for the Warhawks, Madsen was a four-year starter as a goalkeeper, and helped lead the program to three NCAA tournament appearances (1999, 2001 and 2002) which all finished in the round of sixteen. Madsen was an All-Region performer in 2002 and compiled a career goals against average of 0.92 in 59 games.
Madsen was an all-conference performer at Brookfield East (Wis.) High School, and he helped lead the 1997 team to a WIAA Division I state championship. Madsen also played for Milwaukee Kickers Nationals/F.C. Milwaukee and was part of teams that won five straight club state championships.
Madsen, who currently plays competitively with the Milwaukee Kickers Majors team, graduated from UW-Whitewater in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in business, and he earned his master's degree in curriculum and instruction in 2005. Madsen is also a member of the NSCAA and currently holds his National "D" License from the USSF.
Madsen replaces Marc Colwell, who stepped down after five seasons as head coach of Lakeland's soccer programs to take a position in his hometown outside of coaching.
The women's team advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament in 2005, the second NCAA berth in the program's history, after winning the Lake Michigan Conference Tournament championship. The women were 14-5-2 overall, 6-1-1 in the LMC.
The men's team finished 6-8-4 overall, 3-1-3 in the LMC.
