Lakeland takes down Eureka

The Lakeland football team won its third straight game and remained unbeaten in Illini-Badger Football Conference play with a lopsided 45-6 win at Eureka College on Saturday.

The Muskies (3-3, 3-0 IBFC) saw their offense score on six of their first seven possessions and Lakeland led 38-0 before the Red Devils (0-5, 0-3) finally got on the board early in the fourth quarter.

Lakeland offense rushed for 325 of its 448 total yards as freshman Dominique Collins, who recently switched from fullback to halfback, led the Muskies with 23 carries for 142 yards and two touchdowns. He had over 100 yards rushing by halftime.

"I'm very happy with Dominique and the offensive line," said Lakeland head coach Jim Zebrowski. "It was great game for Dominique to start at running back. After today he'll be our starting running back."

Collins was the first one to get the Muskies on the board late in the first quarter on a 2-yard run, then he scored again in the early in the second quarter on a 5-yard run. Late in the second quarter, Billy Hughes gave Lakeland 17-0 lead with a 26-yard field goal. Freshman wide receiver Isiah Calhoun gave Lakeland 24-0 halftime lead with a 7-yard TD catch from junior quarterback Brad Wilk.

Lakeland scored three times in the second half - a 6-yard run by Wilk, a 24-yard TD catch by sophomore Matt Pawlyk from freshman QB Jacob Heinemeyer and a 4-yard run by junior Kempton Freeman, who finished the day with 13 carries for 90 yards. Calhoun had five catches for 65 yards and Wilk was 9 of 12 with 85 yards passing to go with his passing and rushing TDs.

The Lakeland defense was once again solid as sophomore linebacker John Wagner led the defense with 11 tackles. Sophomore defensive lineman Stephan Johnson and junior defensive lineman Kevin Hildebrand each had forced fumbles, while sophomore linebacker Brent Miller had a 38-yard interception return.

The Muskies were also able to limit themselves to a season low seven penalties.

"I'm happy with the number of penalties," said Zebrowski. "There weren't very many and we did not turnover the ball once."

The Muskies will look for their fourth straight win when they travel to Jacksonville, Ill., to take on IBFC foe MacMurray on Saturday, Oct. 14.
