Muskies Beat Northland Baptist, 5-0, for First Win

The Lakeland women's soccer team recorded its first victory of the season in a big way with a 5-0 win over Northland Baptist on Saturday afternoon.

"It felt good to get that first win," said head coach Dave Madsen. "The girls bottled up everything they worked so hard for and it all came out today."

Senior Nellie Weiss got the scoring started for Lakeland (1-3) just five minutes into the game, finishing off of a rebound to put Lakeland up 1-0 and notch the Muskies first goal of the season.

Junior Kelly Hopfinger added an unassisted goal six minutes later, and freshman Savannah Johnson and sophomore Jacqui Drexler both scored before the half. Senior Allyce Maus scored the final goal of the afternoon late in the game.

Madsen was pleased with his player's ability to break the scoring drought they had struggled through so far this season, as everything finally clicked into place.

"They were quality goals," he said. "Everyone was getting to the right spots. In the second half I put a challenge on the girls to keep the shutout and put together a complete game. I think they really focused on that."

Senior Alli Weiss only had to make one save to record the school-record 15th shutout of her career and first of the season.

Overall, the team seems to be taking steps in the right direction heading into the start of conference play.

"It's good to see five different people score," Madsen said. "That way we're not relying on one person to carry us. Overall I'm very happy we were able to take a strong hold on the game right from the start."

The Muskies host Alverno for the season's conference opener on Tuesday. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
