Muskies Unable to Hang On To Lead Late Against St. Norbert
Athletics - posted on 4/19/2006
The Lakeland baseball team dropped a back and forth battle against St. Norbert, 12-10, in Wednesday afternoon's make up game.
After quickly falling behind 5-0 in the top of the first inning, the Muskies clawed their way back, beginning with Mitch Heinemeyer's lead off home run in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-1.
St. Norbert added two more runs in the top of the fourth, but Lakeland answered back with three of their own in the bottom of the fourth, led by Heinemeyer's 14th double of the season, a two-run shot that hit the base of the wall in left field.
In the bottom of the fifth, Lakeland plated six runs on just one hit to take a 10-7 lead as St. Norbert committed three errors in the inning.
The Knights pushed a run across in the top of the sixth and then scraped across three more against Kris Saiberlich in the top of the seventh to take an 11-10 lead.
St. Norbert added one more for insurance in the eighth, and Lakeland couldn't answer before the game was called due to darkness.
Heinemeyer went 2-for-5 with four runs batted in and two runs scored to lead Lakeland.
Saiberlich took the loss, his second of the season.
Lakeland will now face Lake Michigan Conference leader Edgewood for a single game on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
