Women's Volleyball Splits Pair of Matches

The women's volleyball team (11-10, 3-3 NAC) split a pair of matches at the Concordia, Wis., triangular meet with a loss to Concordia and a win over Lawrence University on Saturday, Oct. 7, in Mequon, Wis.

Despite playing a hard-fought match with Northern Athletics Conference opponent Concordia, stretching the match to five games after mounting a come-back during games three and four, the squad lost their momentum in game five for a 15-7 loss for their third conference loss of the season, 23-30, 19-30, 30-28, 30-25 and 7-15.

However, the Muskies' freshmen starters continue to stand out on the court, as Kim Linger led the team in kills and blocks with 14 and five respectively, while Brittanie Paulus recorded a huge defensive effort with 26 digs and added 11 kills. Tonia Strebelinski also lent a hand in the back row with 12 digs.

Fortunately, the team was able to recover their composure for a win over Lawrence in the day's second match with scores of 30-18, 31-29 and 30-28.

Defense was key for the Muskies, as three players tallied double-digits in digs. Paulus continued her efforts from earlier in the day to lead the team once again with 20 digs, aided by 11 digs from sophomore Jessica Sparling and ten digs from junior Ashley Domask. Sparling also tallied 42 assists and three aces, while Domask knocked down nine kills.

Sophomore Heidi Kramer topped the kills column with 13, balanced by contributions from Linger with eight kills and junior Shelly Bruni with six kills.

Lakeland will be back in action with a conference home match against Maranatha Baptist on Tuesday, Oct. 10. Although the Crusaders currently have only one loss in NAC play, the Muskies will look to get their conference record back on track.

Game time is set for 7 p.m. in the Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
