Women Drop Tough NAC Game to Edgewood

The Lakeland College women's basketball team (9-7, 6-4 NAC) incurred a tough loss to Edgewood College, 64-50, in Northern Athletics Conference action on Tuesday, Jan. 23, on Lakeland's home floor.

The Muskies trailed, 35-25, at halftime, despite 15 first half points from senior forward Jenna Boehm, but would use a 7-1 run midway through the second half to cut the Eagles' lead to seven. Junior guard Brenda Paulson hit two jumpshots on back-to-back possessions, then freshman guard KC Blahnik and senior forward Danielle Duranceau each added baskets of their own to put the score at 50-43.

However, the Muskies were unable to get any closer, as Edgewood shot a nearly-perfect 94 percent from the free-throw line and out-rebounded the Muskies 39 to 25.

"A big stat for me to look at at the end of the game that shows the most heart on either team is the rebounding situation, and they slaughtered us on the boards," said head coach April Arvan. "Their seniors played like they wanted to make sure they got this win, and they needed it to keep them in good shape in the NAC."

Four of the Eagles' players finished in double-digits, led by sophomore forward Megan Scheele with 18 points.

The Muskies were led by Boehm, who finished with 17 points, followed by Paulson with 11 and Duranceau with 10. Blahnik came off the bench to finish with a team-high six rebounds.

"We did not follow the game plan," Arvan said. "If we had executed our game plan we still may have lost, but at least we may have kept it close. When your opponents play above their averages, our players have to match that and go even more above and beyond what they normally produce. We had to have Brenda, Danielle and Blahnik contribute more. They are our blue-collar x-factor players.

"Jenna Boehm played as hard as she could, but unfortunately one player doesn't make a team. When our role players step up, I think we'll be tough."

The Muskies will hit the road later this week for two games in Illinois, first facing off with NAC opponent Aurora on Thursday, Jan. 23, whom Lakeland defeated, 65-54, in their first meeting this season.

"We need to try to set achievable goals," Arvan said. "I'd definitely like to compete and keep it close."

Game time with Aurora is set for 7 p.m. in Aurora, Ill.
