Muskies fall to Edgewood in Semi-Final

MADISON – Lakeland scored 15 points in the final 53 seconds, but Edgewood hit some critical free throws to pull out an 85-81 win over the Muskies in the Lake Michigan Conference Tournament semifinals.

Trailing 77-66 with 53 seconds left, Lakeland put its 57-percent second half shooting to quick work as freshman Kris Saiberlich hit a pair of 3-point shots and junior Germayne James also hit a three.

Edgewood’s Greg Blaska hit one of two free throws to give the Eagles a 83-79 lead, and after Lakeland cut it to two on a James layup, Seth Cooper made a pair of foul shot to seal the win. The Eagles (16-9) went to the free throw line 18 times in the game’s final 1:26.

Edgewood, the tourney’s top seed, advances to host Concordia (an overtime winner over Wisconsin Lutheran) in the LMC Tournament title game next Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner earns an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

Lakeland’s season ends at 14-12.

Lakeland senior Nick Zeck closed out his basketball career with 25 points (17 in the first half, including Lakeland’s first 12 of the game) and 12 rebounds. James scored 22 of his 24 in the second half, and Saiberlich added 18. Lakeland was without the services of senior starting forward Ryan Hiir, who was unable to play due to illness.

Cooper led the Eagles with 25 points, 19 in the second half. David Michalkiewicz added 23 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Edgewood shot 50 percent for the game.
