Aanonsen takes Muskies' women's golf coach post

Sheboygan, Wis. - Wisconsin native Aaron Aanonsen, a new face in the Lakeland College athletic department, has been named head women's golf coach at Lakeland College.

Aanonsen was captain of the Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School golf team in Wittenberg his junior year as well as being a two-year letterwinner in golf. A four-year letterman in basketball at Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Aanonsen was a three-time all-conference basketball selection and served as captain for two years. He played for his father, head coach Jerry Aanonsen, and set a numerous school records. He was named a Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division II and Channel 7 All-Star as a senior, and graduated with highest honors.

After turning in an eye-opening second-place finish in the Lake Michigan Conference last year, Aanonsen is excited about this year's prospects as the Muskies move into the new Northern Athletics Conference.

"We had a great team last year, giving us a great stepping stone to build upon this year," said Aanonsen. "We have some key returnees coming back and some newcomers who we are excited to have join the Lakeland golf family."

Aanonsen, who also serves Lakeland as an assistant men's basketball coach, played basketball at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and was elected team captain as a senior in 2004-05. He graduated with highest honors with a bachelor's degree in exercise and sport science - sport management.

During his time at UW-L, Aanonsen served as an athletic department intern at Viterbo University under athletic director Barry Fried, and also coached AAU Youth Club basketball teams in central Wisconsin.

Currently working towards a master's degree in educational leadership-activities management from Minnesota State University Moorhead, Aaron and his wife, Brye, reside in Sheboygan. She is an associate director of admissions at Lakeland.

The Muskies' golf season gets started on Sept. 8 with action against Edgewood College at The Oaks Golf Course in Madison.
