The Lakeland men's basketball team beat Concordia University, Wis., in a 74-73 nail-biter in Northern Athletics Conference action at Lakeland College on Wednesday night.
The Muskies (5-4, 4-1 NAC) opened the game with a pair of 3-point shots by junior guards Shane Grube and Kris Saiberlich. However, the Falcons (1-3, 1-7 NAC) responded to each shot with 3's of their own, shooting three of them for their first nine points of the game. Concordia shot almost 50% behind the arc, going 8-17 in the first half. The Muskies fell behind by as many as 11 points in the first half and went into the second half behind 45-37.
However, Lakeland responded in the second half, cutting the Falcon's lead to two when junior guard Aaron Regal hit a 3-point shot a little over three minutes into the half. With just under 10 minutes left, junior forward David Hoerres scored on a lay-up to tie the game up, 58-58, but it wasn't time for the Muskies to take the lead just yet. They finally pulled ahead a minute later when freshman guard Phil Sontag nailed a shot behind the arc for a 63-62 lead.
Concordia would tie the game up again, 68-68, with five minutes left to play and regained the lead just seconds later for a 69-68 advantage. The lead would be their last, as the Muskies went up 72-69 with just two and half minutes left to play with a foul shot by Regal. On the Falcons possession, Steve Huenick missed a lay-up for the Falcons. Junior Danny Ehnert took the rebound, but the Muskies turned the ball over to the Falcons just seconds later. Concordia capitalized on the mistake to turn it into a 72-71 game. Regal responded for the Muskies with a lay-up to put Lakeland ahead 74-71.
The Falcons would go to the line on the next shot again, making it a one point contest with just 53 seconds to play. The Muskies turned over the ball on the next play to give the Falcons a shot at the win. However, Concordia was whistled for a travel on the ensuing play to seemingly clinch a win for Lakeland. Following a Lakeland timeout, Concordia's DeShawn Robinson stole Lakeland's inbounds pass, but the Muskies survived when Robinson's shot at the final buzzer was off the mark.
"Overall it was bad at times and then overall guys stepped up and found a way to win," said Lakeland head coach Kyle Brumett.
The Muskies played without leading scorer Matt Rogers, as well as Zach Buchman and Peter Worth, who did not play after breaking team rules.
However, five players scored in the double digits for the Muskies with Regal pacing the team with 15 points and three assists.
"He made some plays down the stretch that really won the game for us," said Brumett of Regal's efforts.
Saiberlich scored 10 points and posted a career high seven rebounds. Sontag and Grube both had 12 points, as well as four and six rebounds respectively.
"Phil missed the last game with injury and for him to come out this game and play the way he did was pretty incredible," mentioned Brumett. "He took a charge in the Wabash game and fell back and landed on his wrist. He wasn't able to play against Alma, but he was ready to go tonight."
Junior Danny Ehnert scored 10 points and led the team with nine rebounds and four assists.
"Danny did a lot of little things although he was in foul trouble," said Brumett. "He had nine rebounds and 8-10 from the free-throw line. That was another concern for me because Matt gets fouled so much and a big part of what we are trying to do is get to the free throw line. I think Danny really stepped up and did some things for us. He did not make as many shots, but he was doing other things to help us."
There were other players who also stepped up against the Falcons including Hoerres who scored eight points and seven rebounds.
"David Hoerres didn't get double figures, but he is 4-9 from the field, for over 50%," said Brumett. He also had seven rebounds, four of them offensive. He didn't turn the ball it over."
"Some guys bailed us out," added Brumett. "Andy Marks only played five minutes and I thought he was really good for the five minutes that he played. He got a basket. You win by one and they all count, so his was just important as anyone else's."
Lakeland will play again this weekend at home as they face Edgewood College (5-5, 3-1 NAC) on Saturday. Game time is set for 4:15 p.m.
