Lakeland drops decision at Aurora

The Lakeland College men's basketball team dropped a Northern Athletics Conference game to 18th ranked Aurora College 94-76 on Wednesday night in Aurora, Ill.
"We had a lot of good efforts tonight," said Lakeland head coach Kyle Brumett. "You always want to win the game, but when you play one of the top teams in the country, it can't always be about the score. I felt we did some really good things and it wasn't all about the score tonight."
The Spartans (16-1, 9-1 NAC) jumped out to a nine point lead almost 10 minutes into the first half. The Muskies (8-8, 6-4 NAC) cut the lead to three to make it a 34-31 ball game with six minutes remaining in the half. However, the Spartans went on a 13-4 run to finish the half and go into the locker room with a 47-35 advantage.
The Spartans continued to roll in the second half, leading by as many 25 points and finished the game on top.
"There is a reason Aurora is 16-1 and ranked where they are," said Brumett. "That is because they are really good. If you don't execute and play well they are so well coached they make you pay for that. Even when you do things right they can still make you pay because they are so individually talented. Larry Welton and Darrick Leonard are hands down the two best players in the conference. Their other guys are really good too. It's not just a one man or two man show. They want to play fast like us and they are conditioned well. It's a tough team to prepare for and a tough team to beat. You have to play really well. I thought we played well, just not really well."
The Muskies were 43 percent from the field and had 32 rebounds in the contest.
"We talked this week a lot about get back to competing and having fun and letting that show when we play," said Kyle Brumett. "I really thought we did that tonight"
Sophomore Matt Rogers led Lakeland with a game high 27 points, junior Kris Saiberlich had 20 points and junior Shane Grube came off the bench for 15 points in the Muskies loss.
"Matt was outstanding," said Brumett. "He got back to being really aggressive around the basket and not settling for jump shots. He also got to the free throw line and made his free throws. Kris played really well and so did Shane who has been sick."
Larry Welton led the Spartans with 23 points and 16 rebounds, while Dusty Magee had 23 points. Darrick Leonard added 21 points and five rebounds.
Lakeland will travel back to Illinois on Saturday to take on Dominican University in conference play. Game time is set for 4:15 p.m.
