The Lakeland Muskies wrestling team took third place, with 68 points, out of eight teams at the MSOE Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 2. The Muskies had three wrestlers win the championship at their weight class in sophomore David Copp (125), junior Paul Hartt (184) and senior Mark Vanden Hoogen (285).

"Overall I was really proud of the way we wrestled," said Lakeland head coach Pete Rogers. "We wrestled some tough guys and we walked away with quite a few wins."

Vanden Hoogen was the No. 1 seed in the heavyweight division and had two pins en route to the championship. After a bye in the first round, he pinned UW-Platteville's Justin Washington in 4:17. In the semifinals, Vanden Hoogen pinned Joe Rodriquez of UW-Oshkosh 2:46 into the match to move onto the championship round. For the tournament title he defeated UW-Platteville's Ryan Rozek with a 5-3 decision. In addition, Vanden Hoogen was also named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

"Mark just continues to wrestle great and he is now 8-0 for the season," said Rogers. "He is the first wrestler since I have been here to win the most outstanding wrestler at a tournament."

Copp took the 125 division with three wins. The No. 3 seed defeated UW-Oshkosh's Kyle Kleuskens in the quarterfinals on a technical fall with a 22-7 score six minutes into the match. He routed James Williamson of Lawrence University 10-4 in the semifinals and then took down UW-Platteville's Spencer Peterson 8-3 for the title.

Hartt won three straight matches on his way to the championship in the 184 weight class. After a bye in the quarterfinals, the No. 1 seed defeated Joe Austin of Lawrence University 7-3 in the semis and then took down UW-Oshkosh's Pat Detmer 7-4 for the championship.

"David is 7-1 and Paul is 6-1 and both had a great day," said Rogers. "Neither one had a close match all day. Both have the potential to get to the top."

The Muskies had two wrestlers take third place in sophomore Jonas Flok (157) and freshman Adam Sutter (285).  Flok had four pins and Sutter had three en route to their outstanding performances.

The Muskies will be back in action on Dec. 9 as they take on UW-Oshkosh and conference foe MSOE at noon. at the Wehr Center.
