Athletics - posted on 2/10/2007
Ten Muskie wrestlers finished in the top four of their weight classes as Lakeland took second at the Northern Wrestling Association conference tournament on Saturday at Lakeland College.
The Muskies finished with 95 points, just behind Lawrence who won the tournament with 109 points.
"With five starters out, these guys really stepped up and put all their heart into it," said Lakeland head coach Pete Rogers. "They wrestled hard and I am proud of them."
Junior Paul Hartt was named Northern Wrestling Association Wrestler of the Year. Hartt took home first place at the tournament in the 184 division.
"Paul has had a fabulous season and I hope he finishes strong," said Rogers. "He definitely deserved to be named Wrestler of the Year. I look for good things from him next weekend at regionals."
Hartt wasn't the only Muskie to take home a tournament title. Sophomore David Copp (125) and Sophomore Kory Theil (141) also were named champions in their weight classes.
"Kory Theil lost to his opponent in the championship two times prior and he really stepped it up this time," said Rogers. "David Copp went through the tournament and did a great job like I thought he would."
Freshman Jake Frias (149), sophomore Cody Klopp (165) and freshman Adam Sutter (285) all took home runner-up titles for the Muskies, while freshman James Jinning (133) finished third.
Senior Noe DeLeon (133), freshman Cameron Smit (157) and sophomore John Wagner (197) all finished in fourth place in their weight classes at the tournament.
The Muskies will be in action at the Great Lakes Regional next Saturday in Elmhurst, Ill.
