Softball Opens NAC Tourney with Win Over Falcons
Athletics - posted on 5/4/2007
The No. 2 seeded Lakeland College softball team opened the 2007 Northern Athletics Conference Tournament with a 4-2 victory over No. 6 Concordia, Wis., on Friday, May 4, in Aurora, Ill.
Both squads were deadlocked at the close of the first inning, each scoring one run, but the Muskies (27-10) were able to pull ahead in the fourth inning to make it a 3-1 game, tallying three hits in the inning. Freshman second baseman KC Blahnik kicked off the offensive drive with a double, then stole third and was later able to score on an error by the Falcon's catcher. Junior third baseman Kourtney Peters then tallied a single, and junior first baseman Allison Lock drove in the team's second run of the inning with an RBI double.
Lakeland would increase their lead by one in the fifth inning, and although the Falcons (19-23) scored another run at the top of the seventh it was not enough to take down the Muskies.
Freshman center fielder Chelsea Coenen led her squad at the plate, batting a perfect 2-for-2, while junior right fielder Rebecca Schuettpelz and Lock each tallied an RBI.
Freshman Sara Roberts picked up the win on the mound to improve her record to 19-5 on the season with six strikeouts.
Lakeland will continue NAC Tournament play with No. 1 Aurora (33-8) on Saturday, May 5. The winner of that game will move on to the championship game at 1 p.m., while the loser will face No. 5 Edgewood (23-17) at 11 a.m. for a chance at still making the championship game in the double-elimination tournament. Game time with Aurora is set for 9 a.m. in Aurora, Ill.
