Lakeland Opens Season 1-2 After Lakeland Duals

The Lakeland College Muskies opened their 2006-07 wrestling season with the Lakeland Duals on Saturday, Nov. 11. The Muskies went 1-2 defeating Manchester (37-10), while dropping matches to Coe College (30-7) and University of Wisconsin Platteville (21-20) in very close, hard fought matches.

"I think competing with such a young team we did well today," said head coach Pete Rogers. "We lost to UW-Platteville by just a point and they are ranked 24th in the nation."

On the day senior Mark Vanden Hoogen, wrestling in the heavyweight weight class, would go 3-0, defeating all three opponents that he faced. He pinned the fifth-ranked heavyweight in the nation Ryan Rozek at 3:14 from UW-Platteville, took down Bryan Frush from Manchester College with a fall at 1:05, and defeated Jared Carder of Coe College, 13-4.


Junior Paul Hartt would also have a stellar day in his 184 weight class, going undefeated, 3-0. He pinned Matt Beschta of UW-Platteville at 3:20, defeated Joe Sherer of Manchester College on a fall at 3:55 and then beat the fourth ranked 184-wrestler in the nation Greg Lalla of Coe College, 7-2.

 

In team action, Lakeland fell to University of Wisconsin-Platteville, 21-20 in the first round of the day in a very close match. The Muskies received wins from David Copp (12-1) at the 125 weight class, Clint Harbord (12-2) in the 133 division, Hartt with at pin in the 184 weight class, and Vanden Hoogen with a pin at heavy weight.

The Muskies record would improve to 1-1 with a victory over Manchester College 37-10 in the second round of the day. Copp won the 125 class via a forfeit, while Harbord would also took the 133 division on a forfeit. Cory Theil took a 9-1 decision at 141, Jake Frias won (5-3) at 149,  Jonas Flok took his match in the 157 weight class on an opponent fall, Hartt won on a fall by his opponent in the 184 weight class and Vanden Hoogen took the heavyweight division with a fall as well.

The Muskies would drop their last match against Coe, 30-7 in the final round of the day to drop the Muskies overall record to 1-2. Hartt and Vanden Hoogen would cap off the day as the only Muskies to go undefeated. Hartt took down his opponent (7-2) in the 184 weight class and Vanden Hoogen won 13-4.

The Muskies will next be in action on Tuesday, Nov. 21 when they take on UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m. on the Lakeland campus. It will be the second of five home matches during the season for the wrestling team.
