Muskies Fall to New England in Heartbreaker
Athletics - posted on 3/12/2007
The Lakeland baseball team's offensive struggles continued for a third game as they dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to New England College on Monday.
After falling behind 2-0 in the second inning, the Muskies tried to battle back, answering with one run in the top of the third off an RBI single from Tyler Schmitt that scored Shawn Loch.
But Lakeland couldn't push across the tying run despite a few chances near the end of the game.
In the eighth, Lakeland put runners on first and third with one out, but Paul Smith was picked off at first and Zach Hilbert flew out to right to strand the runner at third.
In the ninth, the Muskies again tried to tie, but left runners on first and second after Adam Hablewitz grounded out to third to end the game.
In all, Lakeland left 10 runners on base.
Brett Nelson took the loss despite allowing only two runs on four hits in five innings. Jake Van Camp pitched three scoreless innings in relief and allowing only one hit.
Lakeland will play again tomorrow at 4 p.m. when they face the University of Minnesota-Morris.
