Lakeland Drops Game One to Rockford
Athletics - posted on 4/29/2007
The Lakeland College baseball team fell to Northern Athletics Conference foe Rockford 9-8 in game one at RiverHawks Stadium in Loves Park, Ill. on Sunday.
However, the Muskies (12-19, 8-9 NAC) will have to wait for the results of game two, as it was suspended in the middle of the 8th due to weather with the Regents leading, 13-12. The game must be finished because it is a conference contest. Both coaches will discuss when to finish the game.
In the opener, Rockford (21-11,14-4 NAC) got on the board first with a run in the first inning. Lakeland's Shawn Loch responded with a home run in the second inning. The Regents added a pair of hits in the bottom of the second to put the game in their favor, 3-2
In the fifth inning, Tyler Schmitt hit a homer to left center field in to send in Eric Hettman. Mitch Heinemeyer followed with a home run of his own to left field to put the Muskies up, 4-3. The Regents answered with six runs in the bottom of the fifth, making it a 9-4 game.
Lakeland was able to come back with an RBI by Alex Grant in the sixth. Shawn Loch doubled in the seventh for a pair of runs and Hettman also added a run in the seventh with a single. But, that was as close as the Muskies would get as the Regents took the contest, 9-8.
Lee Chepil took the loss on the mound for the Muskies, allowing three hits in two innings of work.
The Muskies will be in action again on Friday when they face Dominican University in River Forest, Ill. Game time is set for Noon.
