Ota Helps Men's Track to Seventh Place Finish

Athletics - posted on 4/21/2007

The Lakeland men's track team took seventh place with 36.50 points out of 20 teams participating in the Benedictine Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 21, in Lisle, Ill.

The Muskies can attribute a great deal of that success to freshman Tinashe Ota, who won the long jump with a 22'07.75 leap, and took second in the 100 meter dash (10.90) and third in the 200 meter dash (21.66).

Ota was also backed by solid performances by his teammates in the long jump and triple jump, as freshman Nic Horstmeier finished eighth in the long jump with a 20'10.50 leap and junior Julius Higgs took ninth in the triple jump with 40'04.25. Horstmeier also competed in the 110 meter hurdles, finishing 12th with a time of 16.89, while Higgs and senior Ricardo Brown competed in the 400 meter dash, finishing 19th and 26th respectively.

Although the majority of the Muskies' women's team was unable to compete due to prior commitments, freshman Terra Hiben competed in the 800 and 1500 meter runs, finishing ninth in the 1500 (5:14.24) and 14th in the 800 (2:35.13).

Lakeland will compete again this Saturday, Apr. 28, at the Private College Championship. Meet start time is set for 10:30 a.m. in Kenosha, Wis.
