Men's Track Keeps Improving, Wins Two Events

The Lakeland men's track team took sixth place at the Private College Championship on Saturday, Apr. 28, with 60.25 points in Kenosha, Wis., while the women's team finished 10th. The men's team was also able to record the highest finish out of any Northern Athletics Conference team that participated, as Concordia, Wis., placed seventh, Wisconsin Lutheran finished 10th and Edgewood placed 11th.

Freshmen Tinashe Ota and Nic Horstmeier were instrumental to the men's team's success along with junior Julius Higgs, who won the high jump at 6'4." Ota also recorded a first place finish with a time of 22.16 in the 200 meter dash. He also placed second in the 100 meter dash (11.10) and third in the long jump with a 21'1.50 leap. Horstmeier was also impressive in the long jump, finishing ahead of Ota in second place with a jump of 21'7.50. He also took third place in the 110 meter hurdles (16.66) and eighth in the high jump (5'6.50).

Freshman Luke Herriges also tallied a major contribution to the Muskies' point total, finishing second in the high jump just behind Higgs. Higgs also competed in the 800 meter run and the triple jump, finishing in eighth place in both events with a 2:06.62 in the 800 and a 41'00.25 leap in the triple jump.

The women's team scored its only points of the day in the 4x100 meter relay, finishing sixth in 54.31.

Sophomore Maggie Short led the charge in the two other events the women's team competed in, finishing 13th in the 100 meter dash (14.05) and 16th in the 200 meter dash (29.10). Sophomore Amy Christensen finished just behind Short in both events, placing 14th in the 100 (14.11) and 17th in the 200 (29.28). Sophomore Jacqui Drexler also competed in the 100 and 200 meter dash events, placing 16th (14.43) and 20th (30.10), respectively.

The track team will wrap up its season with the NAC Outdoor Championships on Saturday, May 5, at the Krauss-Miller-Lutz Athletic Complex in Milwaukee, Wis. Meet start time is set for 10:30 a.m.
