Men's Volleyball Performs Well at Hoosier-Illini Tourney Despite Loss to Illinois

The Lakeland College men's volleyball team nearly escaped match play undefeated at the Hoosier-Illini Classic, suffering their only loss of the weekend on Sunday, Feb. 25, in a tight match with a strong Illinois squad (25-22, 17-25, 7-15).
Prior to the loss, the Muskies (19-2, 4-0 WVC) rolled over the other three teams in their four-team pool on Saturday, Feb. 24, defeating Miami (Ohio), Wright State and Florida State two games to none in each match. Against Miami (Ohio), junior middle hitter Avdo Omerbegovic paced the offense with eight kills while also contributing two blocks to help the squad win the match, 25-13, 25-22. Senior outside hitter Matt Martin was kills leader against Wright State, knocking down six and also adding four digs to help lead the Muskies to a 25-12, 25-18 win. In the last match of pool play against Florida State, Omerbegovic made major contributions once again with eight kills, two blocks and one ace to put the squad up, 25-14, 25-18.
The cross-over match with Texas A&M was Lakeland's final match win on Saturday (25-18, 25-21), in which Martin produced important efforts on offense and defense with seven kills, six digs and three blocks and sophomore setter Matt Clemens put up 21 assists and went for four digs.
The Muskies split their matches on Sunday in the gold playoffs of the tournament, first defeating Western Illinois (25-16, 25-17) with the help of a double offensive threat from Martin and senior middle hitter Adam Plach, who recorded eight and seven kills respectively. The duo also assisted the squad's back row strength as Martin had nine digs and Plach tallied three. Next came Lakeland's hard-fought match loss to Illinois, in which sophomore outside hitter Joe Julkowski led the squad with six kills, three digs and one ace.
"This was a fun weekend of volleyball," said head coach Chad Schreiber. "We found a high level in our game very early and were able to sustain it. Unfortunately we ran into an Illinois team that played the most flawless match I've ever seen anyone play. They took a lot of risks with their serves and big swings on offense with very few errors in either department. It was an intensely played match that I would have to think was fun for people to watch. There is no room for error in matches like that and they forced us to break first. Win or lose, it is matches like that you want to be a part of."
Lakeland will return to Wisconsin Volleyball Conference match play with a home match-up with a rival Marquette squad on Thursday, March 1, at 8 p.m.
