Muskies Build Momentum with Win Over CUW

The Lakeland College women's volleyball team improved to 2-0 in the Northern Athletics Conference following a 3-0 (30-23, 30-26, 30-21) win over Concordia University, Wis., on Thursday, Sept. 13, in Mequon.
"We played really well tonight," said head coach Chad Schreiber. "Concordia is a good team, and we haven't played well at their place in the past. We were able to set the tone from the beginning of every game. If we were behind, I don't think it was by more than two points."
The Muskies (3-3 overall) were able to build fairly comfortable leads in each game with strong offensive efforts, as three members of the squad reached double figures. Senior outside hitter Ashley Domask led the charge with 14 kills, while also adding 10 digs. Senior middle hitter Shelly Bruni and sophomore outside hitter Brittanie Paulus each tallied 10 kills apiece, with Paulus also chipping in 16 digs on defense. The contributions of junior setter Jessica Sparling were also instrumental to the victory, as she put up 40 assists.
Sophomore defensive specialist Tonia Strebelinski was also a key component of the Muskies' success, as she recorded a whopping 23 digs.
"Tonia Strebelinski passed very well," Schreiber said. "Her passing allowed us to do what we wanted to on offense. Shelly and Kim Linger were also very active in making sure they were doing their jobs blocking."
Lakeland now faces a challenging tournament at UW-La Crosse this weekend, and will attempt to extend its recent streak of strong, consistent play on offense and defense.
"This weekend's teams will be tough," Schreiber said. "Two of the four teams we will play, St. Thomas and Carthage, went to the NCAA Tournament last year. I think we're ready to find out if we made the right adjustments from the first weekend at Elmhurst in order to compete against high-caliber teams."
The Muskies will open the UWL Tournament with the host Eagles on Friday, Sept. 14, at 3:30 p.m., followed by St. Thomas at 5:30 p.m. The tournament will continue on Saturday with Illinois Wesleyan at 10 a.m. and Carthage at 12 p.m.
