Muskies Regain Confidence with Win Over Warriors
Athletics - posted on 10/16/2007
The Lakeland College women's volleyball team bounced back from a tough weekend at the UW-Oshkosh Invite to claim a 3-0 Northern Athletics Conference victory over Wisconsin Lutheran College on Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Milwaukee, Wis.
"I thought we played very well tonight," said head coach Chad Schreiber. "They are a tough team to make a run against, but we were able to steadily take control of each game and make sure they didn't make a run against us."
The Muskies (16-11 overall) never gave the Warriors much hope of a win in any of the three games played, notching 30-19, 30-24 victories in the first two games, then hitting .455 as a team to seal the match in game three, 30-17.
Senior outside hitter Ashley Domask led Lakeland's offensive efforts, hitting .588 to knock down 11 kills, followed by sophomore middle hitter Jessica Keller with nine kills. Keller also led the squad's blocking efforts with six block assists, while senior middle hitter Shelly Bruni tallied five blocks to go with five kills.
"Jess Keller came in and played very well for Kim Linger in the middle, and Shelly Bruni did a nice job for us as well," Schreiber said.
Sophomore outside hitter Brittanie Paulus shouldered the majority of the load on defense with 11 digs, while also knocking down seven kills, and junior setter Jessica Sparling helped pace the offense with 31 assists.
With the victory, Lakeland also pushed its perfect NAC record to 10-0, and moved one step closer to claiming the regular season conference crown with two NAC matches left to play.
"We have yet to lose focus in conference play," Schreiber said. "Hopefully we'll continue to do that, but I also hope that we'll find a way to translate some of that focus to our non-conference matches."
The Muskies will wrap up regular season NAC match play with Milwaukee School of Engineering on Friday, Oct. 19, followed by a match with Rockford on Saturday, which is part of a triangular meet that also includes non-conference Lawrence University.
"I feel pretty good going into all three matches," Schreiber said. "But, we realize there is no room for error at this point."
Match time with MSOE is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wis. The Muskies will begin Saturday's triangular match with Rockford at 10 a.m. at Lakeland.
