The Lakeland College women's volleyball team defeated Edgewood College in a Northern Athletics Conference Tournament quarterfinal match, 3-0, on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Lakeland.
The No. 1-seeded Muskies (21-14) took care of business in the first two games, winning by identical 30-21 margins, but let the No. 8-seeded Eagles come a little too close for comfort in game three, 30-27.
"I expected our girls to bring more energy and effort tonight," said head coach Chad Schreiber. "We served too safe and we didn't take effective shots on offense. I had thought this past weekend at UW-Whitewater prepared us well for the tournament, but apparently we are resting on some overconfidence."
The Muskies, who defeated nationally-ranked Stevens Institute at UW-W on Saturday with a solid team hitting percentage and steady defense, hit a disappointing .154 as a team and committed seven service errors.
Sophomore outside hitter Brittanie Paulus and junior right side hitter Heidi Kramer led the attack with 11 and eight kills, respectively, while sophomore defensive specialist Tonia Strebelinski was instrumental in the backcourt with 25 digs.
Lakeland will look to raise its game in their NAC Tournament semifinal match on Thursday, Nov. 1. The Muskies will host No. 4 Concordia University Chicago, who downed No. 5 Milwaukee School of Engineering in their quarterfinal match, 3-1 (31-29, 28-30, 30-17, 30-22).
The Muskies handily defeated the Cougars, 3-0 (30-20, 30-22, 30-16) in late September, but Schreiber is concerned with his squad's level of focus.
"Momentum is not something you turn on and off," Schreiber said. "When you lose momentum, it takes awhile to get back. I just hope that we haven't left our momentum from the weekend so far behind us that we can't get it back in time for Thursday."
Match time with Concordia Chicago is set for 7 p.m. in Lakeland's Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
