The Lakeland College softball team continued its success in the Northern Athletics Conference, coming out on top of a doubleheader with Dominican University, 8-4, 5-2, on Sunday, Apr. 15, in River Forest, Ill.
With the wins, the Muskies (18-6, 11-1) extended their NAC win streak to four games after sweeping Rockford yesterday.
Freshman Sara Roberts earned the wins on the mound in both games to improve to 12-4 on the season, throwing nearly all seven innings in game one and two innings in the second game, aided by five innings of work from freshman Cassie Felton.
Although Lakeland was deadlocked with Dominican at 1-1 after the first inning, the Muskies used a pair of home runs by junior right fielder Rebecca Schuettpelz and senior catcher Katie Yeager to gain the upper hand. Schuettpelz's three-RBI homer in the third inning helped spark the Muskies' offense to score four runs, as she batted in junior shortstop Elisa Waltz and freshman center fielder Chelsea Coenen. Yeager knocked hers out of the park in the sixth inning, batting in freshman designated hitter Sara Mallion for their final run of the game.
Coenen led her team at the plate with two hits on four at-bats while also scoring two runs.
In game two, freshman second baseman KC Blahnik got the scoring started in the first inning, hitting a double and later scoring on a fielding error off a hit by Coenen. Despite the fact that the Muskies found themselves at a disadvantage going into the bottom of the fourth inning after the Stars tallied two runs off of three hits, the Muskies bats answered back once again as junior first baseman Allison Lock hit the team's third home run of the game to knot the score at 2-2.
The Muskies continued that momentum in the sixth inning, taking advantage of fielding errors and smart base-running skills to score three more runs. The Stars were unable to answer back, giving Lakeland the victory.
Yeager was the offensive leader in game two, tallying two of the Muskies' eight hits while Blahnik led the run total with two.
Lakeland will continue NAC play on Tuesday, Apr. 17, with a doubleheader at Maranatha Baptist. Game time is set for 3 p.m. in Watertown, Wis.
