Muskies Drop 3-0 Decision to UW-Oshkosh

The men's soccer team (0-4) suffered a tough loss on the road against UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday, with a final score of 3-0.

"I knew we had to play at a higher level to make an impact in the game," said head coach Dave Madsen. "The guys were pretty well-organized on the field and were able to make it difficult for Oshkosh to do what they wanted. We just gave them a few too many opportunities and they wore us down."

In fact, the Muskies went into halftime with the score tied at 0-0, but the Titan's relentless offensive attack eventually wore down the defense, leading to Oshkosh's first goal in the 65th minute.

"The way we played the result could have been closer," said Madsen. "After that first goal, things opened up for them. We needed to have more possession of the ball on offense, but we struggled a little with that. If we had been able to do that we would have been able to give our defensive guys more of a chance to recover."

Despite the fact that his squad is still searching for their first win of the season, Madsen was happy with the overall effort his player's showed, particularly on the defensive end.

"The guys did what they needed to do defensively and fought all the way through the game," he said. "Corey Petzold had a strong game in back and Ryan Condon did well in the net. He made a lot of saves, given what he was up against."

The junior goaltender recorded eleven saves on the game, facing a barrage of eighteen shot attempts from UW-Oshkosh. By comparison, the Muskies were able to tally only two shot attempts for the game, both in the second half.

With Northern Athletics Conference play kicking off this weekend the Muskies will look to secure their first win of the season, both overall and in conference.

"I feel pretty good with where we're at heading into conference," Madsen said. "We're getting some people back from injuries and I think the games we have played have done well as far as preparing us for conference. The guys are ready and starting conference games will only increase our concentration level."

Lakeland's first NAC opponent will be Wisconsin Lutheran on Saturday, September 16, in Milwaukee, Wis. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
