Men's Soccer Ends Season with Quarterfinal Loss to Edgewood
Athletics - posted on 10/29/2007
The No. 6-seeded Lakeland College men's soccer team fell to No. 3 Edgewood College, 5-0, in Northern Athletics Conference Tournament quarterfinal action on Monday, Oct. 29, in Madison, Wis.
Edgewood attacked with a vengeance in the first half, scoring all five of its goals between the 16th and 38th minutes, including a hat trick by the Eagles' Kevin Fisher.
"We hung in there for awhile in the first half," said head coach Dave Madsen. "Then we gave up the first goal and the floodgates opened. I was disappointed in our first half play because we were kind of playing scared."
The Muskies buckled down in the second half, preventing the Eagles from any further goals, but the deficit was too much to overcome as they were unable to find the back of the net on offense themselves.
However, Madsen was pleased with the way his squad pulled together in the second half, and feels they can walk away proud of what they have accomplished this season.
"Our second half play showed that we belonged there," Madsen said. "The way the guys have stuck through the hard times we had this year and learned to support each other shows a lot about them. I think this game is a good snapshot of the season because it shows how we can play to our potential, but it also shows there is room for improvement."
Lakeland closes out its season 4-14 overall, while Edgewood will move on to face No. 2 Aurora University in the semifinals on Wednesday, Oct. 31.
