Second Half Shooting Sinks Women's Basketball vs. CUC

Although the Lakeland College women's basketball team started off the first half of their Northern Athletics Conference game with Concordia University Chicago strong, shooting 48 percent from the floor and 64.7 percent from 3-point land in the first half, the Muskies faltered in the second half and fell to the Cougars, 79-72.

Lakeland's long range shooters couldn't seem to miss in the first half, as three Muskies had already reached double-digits by the end of the period to help put the squad ahead of Concordia, 42-34. Sophomore guard Megan Chart was a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range while junior guard Kasey Gussert went 3-for-4 and senior guard Peggy Keiper knocked down four of her eight attempts.

However, the Muskies' offensive power seemed to dry up in the second half as the Cougars caught up and surged into the lead with the help of a 7-0 run midway through the half to make the score 55-48. Lakeland was unable to regain the lead as they were outscored by Concordia, 45-30, in the second half to pick up the loss.

Gussert finished as Lakeland's scoring leader off the bench with 19 points shooting 60 percent from the field with five made 3-pointers. Keiper followed with 17 points, while Chart finished with 12.

Lakeland (5-9, 2-5 NAC) was out-hustled on the boards by Concordia (7-6, 5-3 NAC), 47-31, but sophomore guard KC Blahnik still managed to grab a game-high 11 rebounds while also adding eight points and two steals.

The Muskies will look to snag a NAC win in their second meeting of the season with Maranatha Baptist Bible College on Thursday, Jan. 17. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Lakeland.
