No. 3 Stevens Point overwhelms visiting Lakeland

The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team, ranked third in the country among NCAA Division III teams, overwhelmed visiting Lakeland in the first half en route to a 76-38 non-conference victory.

The Muskies (0-3) shot just 25 percent in the first half and Point (3-0) went on an 18-2 scoring run over a 12-minute stretch to jump to a 43-16 lead by intermission. The host Pointers shot just 20 percent in the second half, but had the outcome well in hand throughout the game's final 20 minutes.

"Obviously there were a lot of negatives tonight, but I do think there were some positives that we can take away," said Lakeland head coach Kyle Brumett. "We played better defensively in the second half. I also feel like our guys didn't quit.

"When you compete, there is always a chance that something like this is going to happen, and in games like this you find out something about the people around you. There were not a lot of positives tonight, but we didn't quit, and in the long run that's important."

Sophomore Anthony Cobb led Lakeland with 13 points and six rebounds, while senior Kris Saiberlich added 11 points. Lakeland finished with 22 turnovers and was outrebounded 49-39.

Pete Rortvedt and Steve Hicklin led the Pointers with 13 points each, and Matt Moses added 12.

Lakeland returns to action Wednesday night as the Muskies host Edgewood in the Northern Athletics Conference opener for both teams. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
