The Lakeland College wrestling team found itself in tenth place out of 27 teams after the first day of competition on Friday, Feb. 1, at the Pete Willson Invite hosted by Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill.
Senior Paul Hartt and sophomore Adam Sutter highlighted the hard-fought efforts put forth by the Muskies, as both are undefeated and in the running to make a claim for the championship title in their respective weight classes.
Hartt, who is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation and is seeded No. 1 in the 197 weight class at the invite, was victorious in both of his matches after a first round bye, defeating Alex Fleet of Tri-State University, 8-3, then taking out No. 8 Curtis Hines of UW-Parkside with a whopping 19-6 decision. Hartt moves on to face No. 5 seeded Jack Peters of Lawrence University, whom he pinned in a dual meet on Jan. 23, in tomorrow's championship semifinal match.
Sutter also jumped into the national rankings this week, as he is now No. 8 in the nation with a No. 3 seeding at the invite. He also turned out a spotless performance for the day, although it did not come easily. After kicking off the day with a 9-1 first round victory over Elizabeth College's Tim Katzaman, 9-1, followed by a pin on Tri-State University's Kyle Brown in 2:40, he battled into overtime with No. 6 seeded Lynn Panko before taking the win, 3-1. The win keeps him in the championship bracket, where he will move on to face No. 7 Dan Laurent of UW-La Crosse tomorrow.
Sophomore Jake Frias and junior Kory Theil also wrestled well, as both went 3-1 for the day and fought hard to stay in the running for the third-place title after being knocked out of the championship bracket.
In the 165 pound division, Frias upset No. 5 seeded Eugene Savelock of Wheaton, 7-4, in the first round before falling to the No. 4 seed, Trent Zempel, in the second round, 8-3. However, Frias carried the fight into the third-place bracket, where he shut out Devon Jurczak, 4-0, to move on to face the No. 8 seed, AJ Coleman, in tomorrow's third-place quarterfinal match.
Theil also put up a tough battle at 141 pounds, fighting back after being knocked out of the championships in the first round by the No. 1 seed. He came back to tally three straight convincing wins, with scores of 4-2 and 10-0, before pinning the No. 6 seed, Dominic Spitalieri of John Carroll College in 3:34. Theil now moves on to Saturday's third-place quarterfinal round where he will face No. 7 seeded Matt Palladino from Manchester.
Junior 157-pounder Jonas Flok also competed, but had a tough day with a 1-2 result after an 18-4 win in the first round. He was defeated by the No. 8 seed in his second match of the day, 9-5, then bowed out of the invite with an 8-4 loss in the third-place bracket to North Central's Jordan Spohn.
The Muskies will look to move up in the rankings, and hopefully close the gap on the current leader, UW-La Crosse, ranked No. 3 in the nation, as the Pete Willson Invite continues on Saturday, Feb. 2. Meet start time is set for 10 a.m.
